marbles and hair clips

  hi all,

i've been wondering what is better... glass half marbles or the acrylic sort?

i'm going to be working on marble magnets this coming week and i'm going to look for supplies tomorrow. but i'm also thinking of using them on hairclips as well.

would the glass marbles be too heavy for a metal hair clip?

I love this set so much that I had to make a second one after the first one sold.
The scan doesn't do them justice.

Marble pendants?
06:18pm 14/07/2006
Okay, so a few weeks ago I was on the HGTV website and found an idea to make a pendant by putting art on the back of a marble (just like making marble magnets) and then turning it into a pendant for a necklace. I recently got an request from a customer who wants a custom made necklace with a particular photo as a pendant, and I'd like to show her the marble pendant idea (plus, I can't remember how they put the hook on it to hang it on the chain!) as an option. Only problem is, I can't find the article on HGTV anymore!

Does anyone have any links to photos of a pendant like this? And also, what could I do to put a hook on the back of a large marble pendant that will hold up to being on a necklace?

Where do I get magnets?
04:16pm 02/07/2006
Okay. I've been looking into making the marble magnets for my friends for upcoming birthdays and etc. I understand how to make them, and I have all of my supplies except for the magnets.

I was wondering, for those of you who have made these little things, where do you get your magnets from?
I'm going to be looking for 1/2" Circle Magnets.

Thank you to anyone who may have a suggestion. I just didn't want to go out running all over with these silly gas prices today just to be let down when places didn't have what I needed.

howdy, folks, i've recently decided to get into this craft, and have a few questions for the more seasoned...

1) i've read that acrylic cabochons are practically bubble- and scratch-free, but i'd imagine they also don't have the weight and coolness (in temperature) of glass, which appeal to me. thoughts on this from users of the plastic "marbles"?

2) in a bag of glass marbles, what's your typical cull rate due to bubbles, scratches, and improper size?

3) i've also read that some glues yellow with time, but lost the URL of the page i found that had specifics, and i can't seem to re-find it. any offenders i should avoid?

thanks much for your help!

  Hi :)

Besides marble magnets - what else have you made with marble/glass pebbles?

I am just curious what other things we could do.

Marbles for you!
06:08pm 26/02/2006
Hiya! I joined this community because I've got a ton of marbles to unload, and thought some of you might be interested in purchasing them. I bought a lot a long time ago to make some marble jewelry, magnets, etc. Well, I was a little overzealous and bought a ton and then got kinda burnt out on the whole thing after a while and still have a lot left. They are all clear glass marbles with a flat bottom which are perfect for all sorts of crafty projects. I've got both the larger (about .75 in) and smaller (.5 in).
50- $2.00
100- $3.50
500- $15.00
Pricing does NOT include S/H. I will ship internationally and accept well-concealed cash, money orders, or Paypal.
If you are interested, just comment with your email, quantity desired, marble size, your location (for shipping quote), and how you would like to make payment. Just so you know, I'm a powerseller on eBay and also run a reputable online business.... I'm not gonna rip you off :)

Marble Magnet packaging
04:02pm 06/02/2006
I'm making marble magnets to sell as a fundraiser at my school's production of the Vagina Monologues. All proceeds are going toward a local femenist self-defense organization.

(I got tons of magnets for reletively cheap at magnetshop.com.)

Now I need to find a way to package them. My main concerns:
- $$$! The more I spend on the supplies, the less I get to donote :(
- Time/effort. I'm making all the magnets for free (i.e. volunteering my time) and honestly, I don't have time to make a kajillion oragami boxes. I need something pre-made that's easy to get. (Anyone want to donate 200 - 500 altoid tins?)
- Fragility (Is that a word?) Anyone who has made marble magnets knows that they are fairly sturdy, but not indestructible. I want to be able to sell them without thinking that they will fall apart in someone's purse or pocket.

Marble hearts! Marble hearts!

Thoughts? Thanks!

Cost of magnets?

What is an appropiate/good price to pay for the magnets themselves? I found them at the fabric store for 10/$1. When I made these a while ago, a friend found a 50pack. (I'll ask her how much they cost, but I was just wondering what you thought.)

Please let me know your thoughts. Thanks!

&hearts some magnets ive made.

I have recently started making these awesome tile magnets, and i adore it. I had the same problem initially with the cloudy tiles. Then, in the garden section of Frys Marketplace (in AZ) I found the best tiles ever made. They are a bit larger in diameter and no damned iridescence! They are wonderful.

Colored Marbles and Glitter Glue

I hope there are still some active members on this group.... :)

I decided to make marble magnets as small gifts for the folks I wouldn't normally spend money on this year. Folks like my many coworkers, a few of my online only friends, etc.

So, I read up, I purchased my supplies, and my ten year old daughter and I sat down to get busy. I got very lucky at Michael's, because the marble bags were on sale for only 99 cents! I purchased three bags of clear, and a set of star/moon shapes and a multicolored bag for the heck of it. I had decided to use my hot glue gun, because I already had the supplies for it. It happened to already happened to have part of a leftover stick of silver glitter glue. I thought I would use some of the darker colored marbles from the mixed set with the glitter glue as throw-away practice sets just to get the hang of it. Then I got down to the real business, with tiny pictures and clear marbles. I also used some craft punches with different colored papers layered on each other instead of tiny pictures. The whole process went very well indeed, and I'm pleased with the results.

But, there was a special surprise in store for us when we sat back and admired our handiwork.

Guess what?

The very best, prettiest set turned out to be the first seven I made with no papers at all. Just glitter glue sticks, magnets and colored marbles. They're truly lovely. You definitely should try it. I arranged them in a set of seven, with a yellow center, and dark petals to look like a flower.

If anyone is still on this community and wants to see them, I can post pictures tomorrow.

Have a good day.

the directions for E-6000 recommend sanding or 'roughing up' the two surfaces before applying the glue.

do any of you who use E-6000 do that?

I'm looking for some marble-y info from those more experienced than I...

I've made marble magnets before using small round glass beads. Yesterday, I bought a bunch of clear glass tiles, 4" x 4" and about an inch thick. I'm going to make them into coasters, the same way marble magnets are made, only I'm going to sandwich the picture in between the tile and a piece of cork.

The only thing is, the underside of the glass, where the photo will be, is not really smooth and clear... it's slightly bumpy, and some of them seem a bit scratched up. Will the silicone fill those cracks in so that they're less visible, or will they still look the same? Also, will the cork stick to silicone?

Any tips on working with a larger piece of glass? I am SO excited to get started on this project!
